Molluscan shell is a kind of bioceramic composite. Despite the material contains over
95% CaCO3 in the form of aragonite combined with 5% collagen, the fracture work it
can bear can be up to 3000 times that of pure aragonite. Such high fracture toughness
can be attributed to the optimized microstructure of the shell. |
